Scotland Part 2 - 2009

On returning from The Orkneys we visited The Castle of Mey - the former holiday home of the Queen Mother. A very interesting tour seeing how "the other half live"! After our second night at Thurso we retraced our tracks down the East Coast and then drove inland to drive across Scotland to the Western side and The Isle of Skye.

This little fishing hut in the middle of a lake amused us.

First stop were the Falls of Shin.

We had coffee at the local tourist venue - this area is owned by Mohammed Al Fayed who also owns Harrods - see his Madam Tussaud statue with his favourite hunting dog.

This bridge was used in one of the well known Scottish films - I think it was The Highlanders so you may recall Mel Gibson striding over this particular bridge.

Across more Scottish countryside - from memory I think this was a canal which traversed the land - we did see some sailing boats at one point.

The Western Highlands of Scotland in the distance.

Loch Broome - the sign amused me.

Loch Broome looking down on Ullapool.

The fishing village of Ullapool

Loch Carron looking down on Plockton which was the setting for the T V series - Hamish Macbeth.

The Kyle of Lochalsh looking across towards the bridge to the Isle of Skye.

The rugged mountains.

Portree

A tour of the Trotternish Peninsula which we did after dinner.

Some thatched cottages on display.

Our home for the night at Portree.

The next morning we woke up to rain - well it is called The Misty Isle - so I didn't venture out of the coach to take this photo of the old bridge over the River Sligachan.

The Eilean Donan Castle on Loch Duich

I think this is Loch Cluanie

Loch Garry

Memorial to the Commando Regiment.
Glencoe the scene of the battle between the Campbells and the MacDonalds - the Campbells won!
After lunch in a very wet Fort William - sorry no chance of photos there - we arrived at Loch Lomond where we took a cruise.

The country where Rob Roy hid in the caves.

Our last night in Scotland was in Glasgow. We had a tour around the city and these are some of the images taken from the coach.
